Job DescriptionAssistant Shop Manager Assistant Shop Manager Job Title:               Assistant Shop ManagerResponsible to:        Shop Manager Hours:19 hours per weekDirectly managing: Volunteers & Stock CollectorsAnnual Leave:33 days inclusive of statutory days, pro rata. Purpose of the JobTo assist the Shop Manager in exercising responsibility for the effective operation of the shop. This will involve either working with the manager, or in their absence, acting with delegated responsibility for:a)      Managing the day to day running of the shopb)      Optimising salesc)      Maintaining effective stock management and merchandising.d)      Managing and training shop staff and volunteerse)      Carrying out shop administration.f)        Taking necessary action to repair and maintain the premises.g)      Ensuring adequate safety.h)      Enforcing Health and Safety policy and procedures.Tasks and responsibilities1.      Strategic Role as Shop Managera)      To work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager to achieve the smooth day to day operation of the shop.b)      To assist the Shop Manager to assess and report on the progress in the shop.c)      To identify and discuss with the Shop Manager potential improvements in operations.d)      To assist the Shop Manager in gaining an awareness of developments in local shops, especially in thecharity/low cost sector.e)      To maintain an awareness of the work of Valley CiDS and relevant local or national issues through press, media and local views.f)        To maintain and develop good channels of communication with colleagues in other Lighthouse Shops, local communities and organisations.g)      To assist the Shop Manager as required in area wide initiatives, for example newshop openings.h)      From time to time, to provide cover for retail employees, in other stores, as required by your Shop Manager.  This would usually be through negotiation and mutual agreement, although in an emergency you may be asked to cover at short notice.2.      Optimising Salesa)      To work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager, to meetthe set sales targets.b)      To assist in marketing campaigns and sales promotions to increase sales.c)      To be a key team member, working to ensure the shop is competing effectively with market competitorsd)      To maintain a high standard of customer care.e)      To actively contribute to ideas for the promotion of the store in the local community and cooperating with the delivery of agreed schemes.f)        To maximise the sales potential of new goods and Christmas cards.3.      Maintaining Effective Stock Management & Merchandisinga)      Work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager, to supervise and maximise the efficiency of the collection service.b)      Work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager, to control pricing in line with company policy.c)      Work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager, to ensure the highest possible resale value of the donated stock.d)      Work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager, to control coding and processing of stock to ensure quality control.e)      To apply company display, merchandising and window dressing standards.f)        Work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager,to control stock density and rotation.g)      Work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager,to execute national promotions in accordance with guidelines.4.      Staff Management & Traininga)      To work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager, tomanage other staff and volunteers, ensuring satisfactory performance.b)      Work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager,to recruit volunteers.c)      Work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager,to provide training for shop staff and volunteers.d)      Work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager,to develop the staff/volunteer team in your shop, encouraging effectivecommunication, achieving objectives, work plans and helping to foster a positive team spirit.e)      To attend area training programmes and liaise with/attend team meetings of retail staff in your area.5.      Administration (as outlined in shop manual)a)      To complete daily/weekly sales returns, in the absence of, or under the direction of the Shop Manager.b)      To apply Trading Standards Regulations in the shop and ensure other staff are aware of these.c)      To apply cash register procedures.d)      To work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager to ensure the shop is adequately staffed and maintaining staff rotas.e)      To work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager toensure adequate shop supplies are in place.f)        To process post in the absence of, or under the direction of the Shop Manager.g)      To bank takings using agreed banking procedures, in the absence of, or under the direction of the Shop Manager.6.      Premises Managementa)      To work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager, to ensure shop housekeeping is to company standardb)      To work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager, to ensure the shop exterior is maintained in good order.c)      To work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager, to ensure shop equipment is kept in good order.d)      To work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager, to identify necessary repairs and maintenance, and to implement agreed action plans for work to take place using authorised contractors.7.      Securitya)      To serve as akey holder.b)      To work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager, to ensure the security of shop takings.c)      To work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager, to provide best circumstances for the personal security of staff and volunteers.d)      To work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager, to ensure that security procedures are understood and implemented by all staff andvolunteers.8.      Health & SafetyTo work with and under the direction of the Shop Manager, to apply company Health & Safety regulations in accordance with the shop manual by:a)      Maintaining Health & Safety records.b)      Undertaking required fire drillsc)      Ensuring Fire Equipment is correctly sited and serviced.d)      Ensuring electrical equipment is properly maintained.e)      Implementing risk assessment procedures as stated in the shop manual.f)        To ensure that health and safety procedures are understood and implemented by all staff and volunteers.g)      Report immediately to the appropriate person any situation that may compromise the health or safety of yourself or others.9.      Generala)      To carry out all these
