An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Paralegal to work within Central Government on a contract basis. This position is based in Londno, initially for 12 months offering up to 12 per hour PAYE.Main Duties:The MTIC Missing Trader Intra-Community Team is a busy litigation team in Her Majestys Revenue and Customs Solicitors Office and Legal Services.The aim of the Team is to defend HMRCs decision to deny input tax as a result of the Appellants knowledge or means of knowledge of fraud.The paralegal will work closely with solicitors to progress a case load of approximately 25 complex and high profile cases at any one time.The paralegal will manage and support all aspects of case preparation and management from commencement of proceedings through to final hearing, ensuring strict adherence to legal deadlines.The individual will work closely with one lawyer but will also be called upon to assist other members of the team when necessary.Although work is allocated by the lawyer, the paralegal is also expected to use his/her own initiative as appropriate, and exercise judgment in deciding when to do so, and to consult with others as necessary.Main Duties Case management/administrative role: Working collaboratively in sharing knowledge of case issues with team Managing cases on VisualFiles and the teams shared drive, and ensuring cases are Lexcel compliant.Maintaining folders in the shared drive, Liaising with administrative and reprographics teams with regard to copying of trial bundles etc.Filing, archiving and other ad hoc administrative duties.Liaising with lawyers &making decisions on the progress of cases, Reviewing correspondence &documentation received from clients, counsel, third parties, Appellants and Tax Tribunal. Essential Experience:Law Degree or other Honours degree plus legal conversion. Completion of either the Bar Professional Training Course or the Legal Practice Course.The paralegal must have the ability to organise large volumes of material, identify missing documents, prioritise tasks and effectively communicate/share intelligence gathered with interested parties. Law Degree or two years paralegal experience in a contentious litigation department.Experience of cases involving civil or criminal fraud would be advantageous.
