     REPORTS TO: Senior Principal Scientist, New Frontiers     JOB HOLDER:TBHLOCATION:Godmanchester, CambridgeshireDATE:October 2017SECTION:New Technologies, CTO Office 1JOB PURPOSEThe purpose of this role is to plan and execute research intomaterials and devicetechnologies within CDT?s Technology Scouting and Feasibility team (New Technologies).  Research is undertaken with the purpose of obtaining information required to critically evaluate early stage projects in order to recommend whether to proceed with a research programme or otherwise.  Project themes are selected and evaluated to enhance CDT?s parent company?s (Sumitomo Chemical Company) current or future products and businesses. This role will deliver technical feasibility experiments and recommendations for these projects and will also generate key Intellectual Property(IP)to support the projects. For existing projects the role has included the preparation of devices for biosensors, charge-storage devices and several technologies based on printed electronics.Key responsibilities include: planning and implementing experiments, including designing and fabricating test devices to demonstrate proof-of-principle for novel technology areas; communicating plans, status and results; developing creative solutions to identified problems; producing new ideas and IP. 2KEY RESULT AREASDesign and implementation of experiments and development of novel devices, materialsor processes that demonstrate technical feasibility of new project areas Development and accurate measurement of robust testing and characterisation methods and the generation of data to support recommendations Identification and development of creative solutions to solve technical problems encountered during the feasibility study of novel materials and devices. Evaluation of market needs and competition for target applications, proposing clear, well-argued recommendations as to whether a project should continue. Devise and communicate a robust work plan and progress towards achieving the target goals Contribution to widening CDT?s IP portfolio. Contributing technology ideas to the New Frontiers team  3MAIN ACTIVITIES Devising, planning and implementing a focused series of experiments on material systems and/or functioning test devices to robustly evaluate the feasibility of proposed ideas Identification and sourcing of appropriate test materials followed by processing or manipulation by a variety of methods to achieve the required physical and chemical properties Development of robust test procedures tocharacterise the material systems produced and to quantify the performanceand stability characteristics,with systematic collection of data from fabricated devices or systems Introduction of improvements to the trial systems to resolve key issues that limit performance Use of literature and industry references to develop robust theoretical models to support activities and proposals Experimental comparison of different material combinations and morphologies to understand how these factors affect device properties Compare technical expectations against market requirements and use these, along with competitor benchmarking studies to realistically assess business opportunities  Identification of market and technical risks to CDT?s technology development programmes and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies Develop opportunities for new IP  4        KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS Working closely withthe Senior Principal Scientist, New Frontiers and the Director, Innovationand other members of the New Technologies Feasibility Team to plan, coordinate and execute main activities to achieve project goals. Working closely with the Synthetic Chemists both for technical interactions and functional organisation of the labs Working closely with the Device Physicists team, device fabrication team and Ink development and test teams for both technical interactions, equipment access and functional organisation of the laboratories Liaise closely with the Analytical Chemistry team to ensure suitable analytical measurements are performed to quantify and qualify results of material processes and to schedule access to equipment, analysis and discussion of results Communicating and working as necessary with the relevantdevelopment teamsat CDT's parent company, Sumitomo Chemical Company, in Japan to ensure coordination of activities and prompt dissemination of results Engagement with the CTO and the New Frontiers team to provide input and insight into new technologies in relation to New Frontiers activities. 5KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED Excellent academic credentials are essential, including a PhD in Materials Science or a Physical sciencediscipline with a strong component ofpractical manipulation, processing and characterisation of functional materials into different forms and combinations Experience of characterising a range of material systems by a variety of techniques is essential Experience of working safely with a range of chemicals in asolid or solution-based form is essential Experience of using materials in prototype application teststructures to demonstrate desired functional properties is essential Creative and inventive with a demonstrated aptitude for a broad range of experimental work and with experience of solving complex problems Experience in planning and communicating a robust series of experiments to deliver the required targets Experience of developingtesting procedures, including writing experimental and data acquisition control programmes for new deviceswould be an advantage Self-motivation and ability to operate independently in a laboratory environment Excellent team-skills, with the ability to interfaceand effectively communicate across multiple scientific disciplines   Experience of identifying ideas suitable for filing patent applications and of supporting this process would be an advantage An understanding of the time-critical demands of target-driven industrial research and of working with drive and passion to work towards critical deadlines.
