Statistician/ Mathematical Biologist (Ref 556-17)Vector BiologyBiological Sciences†Salary of £33,518 to £38,833 per annumFull Time, Fixed Term until 31st December 2020Based in Liverpool with regular travel to Africa†LSTM has recently been awarded a grant by the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF), to form a major new partnership between Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Malawi and the UK to increase the impact of vector control. The Partnership for Increasing the Impact of Vector Control (PIIVeC) brings together leading research institutes and national disease control programmes from these three African countries to develop evidence based solutions for integrated vector control and to strengthen the links between the demand and supply of evidence at the national and global level.† The project has a strong emphasis on capacity strengthening and will support a number of research fellows and also work with national institutes to increase the resilience of African nations to respond to outbreaks of vector borne diseaseThe PIIVec team is recruiting a mid-level statistician/ mathematical biologist with primary interest in vector-borne infections and a strong commitment to training and capacity strengthening; who will contribute to the design of a wide range of studies, from proof of concept to pilot field trials that aim to increase the evidence base for vector control in Africa. The Statistician will lead and/or mentor partners in the analysis of data from these trials, develop training material and provide on-site and remote statistical support to all involved in the project. You will be based in the Department of Vector Biology at LSTM, working closely with the Tropical Clinical Trials Unit at LSTM and our African partners. You will aide with the design of studies from proof of concept, to pilot to full large- scale field trials which aim to increase the evidence base for vector control in Africa, perform statistical quality assurance review and play an active role in developing and evaluating vector surveillance plans. The successful candidate must have completed a graduate and postgraduate degree in statistics with a major component of statistics or epidemiology. Possessing a PhD in a statistics-related field is desirable. You must demonstrate experience in developing and delivering training in statistical methods and a proven ability to explain complex statistics to others with minimal statistical knowledge.† You will have relevant practical experience in biomedical research in a health-related research environment and a record of publishing collaborative research.
